The Nexus S: Is this the Android version of a Cr-48?

Title:   E-mail Print

You’ll have to excuse my Android fanboyism during this piece. The fact of the matter is, I had been trying to track down a Nexus S since the first day that it got confirmed. So when I finally got the notification this past Monday that one was headed my way, I was excited beyond anything that you’ve seen outside of an Apple store the night before a new iPhone.

You see, when the Nexus One came around, people talked it up like it was something that the world had never seen before. Fortunately, at least in some respects, it was. It was the first pure Android device, it was built on a great handset and it carved the way into the future for the Android releases up to and including FroYo. I had high hopes for its successor, the Samsung-built Nexus S. Would they be fulfilled?

Not entirely.

It’s important to understand that I was reasonably impressed with the Galaxy S line of phones. Though the Nexus S has some marked differences, there are some very striking similarities as well. If you’ve used Verizon’s Galaxy S, branded as the Samsung Fascinate, then you’ve essentially held a phone that feels very similar. There should be some pretty significant differences, though, given the OS.

UberMedia Acquires TweetDeck

Here’s one that we didn’t see coming. TechCrunch is reporting that UberMedia, the parent of many applications including the previous UberTwitter, has acquired TweetDeck. The sum, from what we’re reading, is in the $25 to $30 million range.

TweetDeck has had a total of $3.8 million in funding, as provided by Betaworks and Ron Conway amongst others. The recently-named UberMedia, headed by Bill Gross, has had its acquisition guns blazing lately in the Twitter space, first with Echofon and then more recently with the UberTwitter buy.

UberMedia also owns a few other clients. You might know the names of Twidroid and the advertising product called FollowMe, which both fall under the UberMedia banner.

We’ve dropped an email to Iain Dodsworth, CEO of TweetDeck, for confirmation. Given the company’s recent push toward more features (the Android and Chrome clients, as well as Deck.ly come to mind) it isn’t surprising to see an acquisition offer having been made.

Gross’ interest in TweetDeck makes sense as well. Self-described as a lifelong entrepreneur, Gross has made a number of moves over the years with his businesses of IdeaLab, eSolar and the traffic-measuring site Compete. His interests seem to be quite varied, but the more recent acquisitions of third-party Twitter clients is a definitive direction in which a TweetDeck offer would make perfect sense.

We’ll let you know what Dodsworth has to say. If the story turns out to be true, it’s not surprising and huge congratulations to Dodsworth et. al. are in order. TweetDeck is an absolutely essential part of our day here at TNW and we look forward to seeing it grow.

As a side note, Loic Le Meur, founder of TweetDeck’s major competitor Seesmic, has an interesting insight:

Fear not, singletons, don’t despair, depressed daters. Valentine’s day is around the corner and if anything is going to lift your spirits and melt the winter blahs its this next clip. Melted my grumpy mood and put a smile on my face, which was sorely needed.

Dating site startup DateBuzz did some number crunching to flesh out which of the most popular dating rules held up based on the experiences of their users.

From the Earth’s current axial tilt to Men are From Mars… to the authors of The Rules, the common thought is that men and women are busily ignoring/not ignoring, being available/being unavailable, calling/not calling, dating/not dating one another. It’s exhausting. And confusing. Amen to that.

I am super-pleased to see the more enlightened sites studying their members and sharing the trends, best practices and tactics that lead to more successful dating. This is another one of those things I’ve been asking the industry to do for what, five years now?

Pretty soon people may ignore site that

Boston-based mobile-only social network Mocospace is looking at acquiring MySpace. What happened to Myspace still amazes me, but what’s even more remarkable is that Mocospace has 14 million members in their mobile communities.

Five years ago nobody gave much though to mobile dating. It was the 11th most requested features in a singles survey if I recall correctly. How things change.

In 2011 we’re going to see a lot of mobile dating startups trying to grab market dominance in an emerging sector thats remains up for grabs. And here we already have a mobile social network that is larger than every dating site on the planet.

Questions that need to be answered:

Are singles looking for social apps with dating component or dating-only apps?

How big is the market for singles interested in finding other singles satisfying specific criteria within 500 meters? Or do they prefer just to browse profiles. If so, one would think mobile access to a popular site would be more efficient than a startup.

What are the demographics of mobile dating users? Young, don’t spend money, abandon profiles easily, sporadic engagement and limited by the technology of smart vs. feature phones. Or 30

Yesterday I spent some time taking eight years of Match financials and putting them into Excel. Did you know that back in 2000 Match’s conversion ratio was around 10%? Too bad they don’t list those types of details anymore (that I could find.)

Fernando, who blogs at  Breaking the Online Sound Barrier, has written (POF). While some of his assumptions about the details of Plentyoffish’s operating costs are most likely off, I appreciate that he took to the time to write it all down.

Leave a comment with what you agree or disagree with in Fernando’s post.
